Cultural tours of Bhutan
While Bhutan is one of the smallest countries in the world, its cultural diversity and richness are profound. Strong emphasis is laid on the promotion and preservation of its unique culture. By protecting and nurturing Bhutan’s living culture it is believed that it will help guard the sovereignty of the nation.
Bhutan's culture is strongly based on its Tibetan form of Mahayana Buddhism, which contains a sprinkling of Tibet's ancient Bon shamanist religion. The country's rich heritage, protected by Bhutan's isolation from the modern world until the 1960's, is still very much in evidence.
Cradled in the folds of the Himalayas, Bhutan relied on its geographical isolation to protect itself from outside cultural influences. Bhutan has long maintained a policy to preserve its heritage both culturally and economically. Only in the last decades of the 20th century were foreigners allowed to visit the country. In this way, Bhutan has successfully preserved many aspects of its culture, which dates directly back to the mid-17th century.
